ABOUT
J. Susan Cole Stone
I grew up drawing and painting in New England, and after high school attended Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. I spent my childhood years in western Connecticut, but lived most of my adult life in Westerly, Rhode Island, having my studio there for over 30 years. Moving to 2010 Florida was certainly a new experience and I enjoyed the new environment and all the new and exciting subject matter, especially the wildlife. Now I divide my time between Rhode Island and Florida.
Known for attention to detail, my work is in private collections across the country and in such far-flung places such as Australia, Italy and France. I am is able to render a detailed and accurate architectural drawing or painting from life, blueprints or even the concept sketched out on a napkin. My experience extends to illustration, having illustrated over thirty books, multiple publications and commercial graphics projects. My first love, of course, is painting. Watercolor is my favorite medium followed closely by pen & ink and occasionally colored pencils. Clients include University of Connecticut at Avery Point, University of Rhode Island, Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, Rowman & Littlefield, Custom Publishing Services and Greenwood Press.
When I still lived in Westerly, I was longtime member of the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, an artist member of the Portsmouth Arts Guild, and an artist member of the South County Art Association, as well as a president of the Board of Directors there. I was a co-owner of Art Gallery of Viera in Melbourne, Florida for 8 years, and the Executive Director for 6 years.
I remain an Elected Artist member of the Mystic Museum of Art in Mystic Connecticut, South County Art Association in Kingston RI, and the Brevard Watercolor Society of Brevard county, Florida,
